Freedom of information doesn't apply to what we put in our mouths? Maybe the average person does not know what polysorbate-60 is either, but it has not provoked a crisis in comprehension to have such chemical additive information on food labels. The reluctance to put GMO labels on food has everything to do with industrial food and agriculture companies' knowledge that consumers would choose to avoid such products if the labelling was clear and the impact on their profits.

There was time when research was done by scientists that were unbiased and unpaid. Unfortunately, that time has long since pasted and the credibility of any research done by the GMO producing companies does not hold the weight of the merit of the paper it's printed on. Until independent, unbiased, reproducible GMO research is completed, the labelling is warranted. The only other option is to ban it until then. I think it is worthwhile for people to view the documentary, "The World According to Monsanto" to see my point.
