This Central Australian town is undaunted by the long distance (1500 km) that separates it from the closest body of water. Each year Alice Springs’ residents dust off bottomless bath tubs and hull-less yachts in preparation for the world’s only dry boat race. Launched in 1962 as a parody of Oxford and Cambridge’s annual regatta, the Henley-on-Todd draws participants from around the world who can’t resist paddling a canoe with a shovel. Two years ago the race had to be cancelled when a rainstorm flooded the usually dry creek bed that serves as the race course.
