Winter Solstice Marathon

An imaginary, jet-setting itinerary for the longest, longest night (all times local):

6 p.m., Tehran: Begin by snuggling up at a korsee (a low, blanketed table heated from below by a brazier) and feasting on pomegranate and halvah to observe the ancient festival of Shab-e Yalda.

8 p.m., Mill Valley, California: Frolic amid the redwoods in your handmade crown singing “I’m Dreaming of a Green Solstice” at the Muir Woods National Monument Winter Solstice.

8:58 a.m., County Meath, Ireland: Watch in wonder as the first rays of sun illuminate certain dark chambers of Newgrange, a megalithic tomb; the phenomenon occurs only between December 19 and 23 and is witnessed exclusively by winners of a special lottery.

9:15 a.m.: Curl up and hibernate until spring.
