Racialicious takes a stab at making their own. Of course they're approaching things from a different angle, but it's interesting just how many ways this ad campaign succeeds at being skeevy.

I guess this ad concept won out over the even more disturbing, "Damn right your parents drank it...and you are the proof. Eighty proof. That's Canadian Club. Drink well before conception."

I wonder if anyone would find it politically correct to create the equivalent campaign for mom? Perhaps to promote the ladies' vodka they've come up with in Russia. Tagline: "Your mother has had better lovers than your dad," accompanied by a similar montage of 70's party shots.

There's actually another one of this set that evokes the same thing - there are two different posters from this campaign going up around the city, and one has the tagline "Your Dad had a van for a reason" or something to that effect.

The other one is "Your Dad never tweezed anything", which is less cringe-inducing.

The campaign seems to invite responses. On Queen West, someone scrawled "That's why mom left him" on both posters. Which nicely plays into your divorced 50-something copywriter theory. Above a urinal in a bar, where one of these ads was displayed, someone wrote "Your Dad never had to look at ads while he pissed".

Since the sudden and rapid shifts in generational cultures starting in the 60s, fathers have been increasingly portrayed as objects of scorn or derision in popular culture, dinosaurs out of touch with their savvier sons. I like the idea of trying to reclaim fathers as people to be respected. I also like rye. So I have some sympathy with the concept behind this campaign - it's too bad they messed it up with the ick factor.
