"And if anyone can convince Canadians that their own country’s foreign policy is worth paying attention to, it probably has to start with the same people who were in the crowd last night"

And why is that? I'd argue it has to start with us - general citizens - instead of a roomful of Canadian luminaries.

Maybe there will finally be world peace, when the American Empire actually extends American citizenship to all of its subjects, ie you and me living in Canada (and Mexico, and Iraq). Then we can simultaneously vote Bush out of office and enjoy MTV with a clear conscience.

There is a precedent, ie the Pax Romana (Roman peace) that lasted a good 100-200 years -- all those fools in Gaul, Assyria, Scythia, Britannia (far far away from Italy) were also bona fide Romans.
