I definitely agree that it is a shame that good, hardworking, decent people are at the mercy of big corporations and government.

To weigh the "needs of birds and grass" against the existence of human life is beside the point: anything we do to help the environment is essential to future human life.

It is precisely because we care about the existence of future human life that we should conserve the environment. If we want human life to continue to exist, we need to provide functioning ecosystems to offer breathable air, drinkable water, and soil for food. Repairing the water flow in south Florida could be one step towards that.

I would like to know where these million dollar homes are in the Glades. I live here and I just don't know where the writer is talking about....apparently, not in Belle Glade. Also, the writer did not see the new sign for Belle Glade on North Main Street.
Creating a new "River of Grass" is a pipedream of the enviromentalists. I sometimes feel that ideas are worth more than sound scientific research. I, also, feel that the needs of birds and grass is more important to these enviromentalists than the existence of human life. I am sure if they lived out here in the Glades and their way of life and homes were threaten we would see a big difference in their attitudes about the Everglades.
Outsiders to the Glades really don't have any idea about the people here. Sure there are many problems, but what city or town doesn't have problems? The big "buyout" of US Sugar will ulitimately turn everyone's life upside down. It is really a shame that good hard working decent people are at the mercy of Big Corporation and Government.
