The ten medals mean that The Walrus has received the most awards of any Canadian magazine at the NMAs for the third consecutive year.Silver-medal winning December 2007 coverThe Walrus won six gold and four silver medals at the National Magazine Awards (NMA), held June 6 at the Carlu in Toronto. The ten medals mean that The Walrus has received the most awards of any Canadian magazine at the NMAs for the third consecutive year.

The magazine also received twenty-seven honourable mentions, and the award for Best New Writer, Patrick White, for his article “Red Rush” (April 2007).

Here are shots of yesterday’s Walrus luncheon and debate at the University Club of Toronto, titled “Canada and the Surveillance Society: Whose Camera Is on You and Why Don’t You Mind?”

Stimulating discussion was provided to the well over 100 attendees courtesy of writer Hal Niedzviecki and world-renowned futurist Robert J. Sawyer, with the talk moderated by the CBC’s Carol Off.

In the following clip, Niedzviecki and Sawyer discuss the advantages and consequences of a surveillance society. Can transparency improve public safety? (Quicktime required):


The discussion escalates into a provocative debate as the role surveillance has in challenging privacy is questioned:
