The Walrus Editorial Internship is designed to introduce aspiring writers and editors to the magazine industry and to train them to work to the standards of one of North America’s finest general interest publications.

Editorial interns are involved in all stages of the production process and receive instruction in principles of editing and copy editing as well as training on publishing software. Their primary responsibilities are fact-checking stories, writing the factoids in the magazine’s Miscellany section, proofreading copy, and assessing unsolicited pitches. Interns also take part in production and story meetings, shadow-edit articles alongside editors, and assist with Walrus Foundation events.

Internship terms are six months, unpaid. Interns work thirty hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling in order to allow for part-time work. There may be intermittent opportunities for interns to provide paid content for the magazine as well.

Applicants must be graduates of a post-secondary academic institution and must also be no more than thirty years old. Those who do not meet these criteria may make a case for consideration on the basis of exceptional circumstances.

To apply, please submit a statement of purpose, a résumé, and two letters of reference. Qualified applicants will be given a set of tasks related to internship duties to complete on deadline, after which a selected group will be interviewed.

The next round of editorial internships will begin in January 2011. Applications are due at 5pm EST on Monday, November 1, 2010.

Applications should be sent to internship@walrusmagazine.com, or to:
